How Braces Straighten Teeth
Braces straighten teeth by applying constant pressure in a certain direction over time. When our Glendale orthodontist attaches the brackets, they are placed at a very specific spot on each tooth. This placement of the brackets is semi-permanent, and they are connected by an archwire which runs across the front of your teeth. Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, the archwire connected to each bracket will appear to be straight. Additionally, these archwires are held on the brackets by rubber bands called ligatures. You are able to choose whatever color you want, making it especially fun around holidays or special events with your metal braces!Possible Side Effects That Can Happen With Braces
Keep in mind that each patient and each mouth is different. Even though something is listed here as a possible side effect, you may personally never experience any issues at all!- De-calcification leading to cavities is more common when good oral hygiene is not kept throughout your orthodontic treatment. Always brush and floss as directed by your orthodontist in Glendale, CA.
- When your braces are first put on, sores can form on the inside of the mouth where brackets rub against the skin. This is temporary as your mouth becomes used to having the brackets on your teeth. This can also be fixed by applying orthodontic wax to the irritating bracket.
- Going in for an adjustment can occasionally leave your mouth sore, but this is also only temporary. If you experience this, it is best to eat soft foods for a day or two after an adjustment.
- Avoiding certain foods is part of having braces. Our Glendale orthodontist will give you a full list of foods to avoid during treatment.
